Especial: Noche de San Juan

La Noche de San Juan, (Hogueras de San Juan), es una festividad muy antigua en la que se celebra la llegada del solsticio de verano en el hemisferio norte cuyo rito principal consiste en encender una hoguera. La finalidad de este rito era "dar más fuerza al sol", que a partir de esos días, iba haciéndose más "débil" —los días se van haciendo más cortos hasta el solsticio de invierno—. Metafóricamente el fuego también tenía una función "purificadora" sobre las personas que lo contemplaban.
En España se celebra en la noche que va del 23 al 24 de junio. Especialmente en Valencia la gente organiza fiestas en la playa y hace hogueras. Se dice que si a medianoche saltas sobre siete olas, se cumplirán los deseos en los que estés pensando en ese momento. ¿¡Quizas sea verdad?!?

The traditional midsummer party in Spain is the celebration in honour of San Juan (St. John the Baptist) and takes place in June the 23rd at night. Parties here in valencia are usually organised at the beach, where bonfires are lit and a set of firework displays take place. It is said that if you jump over seven waves at midnight, the wishes you’re making in this moment will come true. Maybe it’s true?!?
On the Mediterranean coast special meals like Coca de Sant Joan are also served on this occasion.
